Downpatrick Racecourse

The oldest racecourse on the island of Ireland and host to the venerable Ulster National fixture, Downpatrick Racecourse retained Hood McGowan Kirk LLP's services to deliver 20,000sqm of new running surface adjacent to and contiguous with the existing track. Works included extensive sitewide cut and fill, creation of a new ambulance track, new drainage and perimeter fencing.

Hood McGowan Kirk LLP worked closely with both Hanna and Hutchinson, consulting engineers, and Paul Campbell Turf Agronomy to design, cost and procure the construction of a fully compliant race surface that compliments the historic existing track and will, once brought into use after grow-in, greatly expand the racecourse's ability to race on consecutive days and accommodate larger fields.

Works were delivered across the racing season in phased fashion, with disruption minimised and despite significant inclement weather events.
